Sussex finished the season fifth in division one of the County Championship after Naved Arif bowled them to victory in their final game at Trent Bridge.

Nottinghamshire began the final day on 103-4 and collapsed to 172 all out to lose by an innings and five runs.

Naved Arif took four of the six wickets to fall to finish with Championship best figures of 4-41 and overall figures for the match of 7-127, also a best.

James Anyon sparked the collapse by taking the first wicket and Amjad Khan completed the victory when he removed Luke Fletcher for 39.

The result means Sussex took 23 points to leapfrog Notts, who claimed five, to finish fifth in the table.

Well done lads, for turning it round. A good finish to the season, we're all proud of you.

A good season, I think, no matter what the nay-sayers may suggest!

I openly admit to being one of those nay-sayers. I can't class it as a "good season" because we were poised for success in two of the one-day competitions but, ultimately, failed to reach the final of either. In the end, the only thing we could gain from the year was First Division safety and, in the end, we achieved that comfortably. Amazing how well the team performed at Trent Bridge when the pressure was off, but well done nonetheless. It will be even tougher next season with both Surrey and Middlesex to contend with. Surrey, under Grizzly, could well do a Sussex and dominate the top flight for several years to come. They're going forward; there's a danger that we're going backwards. It will be interesting to see whether there's any change in personnel during the next six months. Will Yardy still be captain and will Rana be back as our main overseas player next year? Those are among the many questions.

Another nay-sayer hear as ryfish mockingly refers, Yes well done Sussex on coming 5th and winning last two games.
Agree totally with the comments of bruce beckett and as I said in previous post Adams has copied the Sussex formula by getting a class spinner(shades of Mushy) who has inspired there last 4 key victories. Also heard Hamilton-Brown praise the team and spirit of Surrey, the best he has ever known, one of the reasons he moved possibly, apart from the money and captaincy of course.
Think Yardy will remain captain and hope Rana comes back and would like to see Brendan McCullum back,as his influence, not necessarily runs, was massive last season in t20,especially for Prior.
Big sort out needed now and I hope Machan makes the breakthrough given the chance. Can see Hodd moving on and probably Beer, unfortunately I can see the likes of Gatting and Brown staying unless the coach moves on.

By the standards of Sussex teams pre-Adams this was an excellent season, and finishing with two wins gives hope going into next year.
.
I think it's only human to feel disappointed with the collapse that saw us lose nine out of eleven games - does that make me a naysayer?
.
However I think with a bit of close-season squad tinkering (rather than major rebuilding) and better luck with injuries/illness to key players we could do better next year and maybe win a trophy again - which after all we've grown to expect!

I think Barry Arif has been very badly treated this season, despite excellent performances with both bat and ball in the limited games he has been played in - in the County Championship. His bowling average is better than all he other seamers, and he was dropped straight after scoring a century to save the game against Lancashire early on in the season and has not played since until the last 2 games of the season when he has performed brilliantly.

I would love to see him sign up for next season, but if I were him I'd blow a raspberry at the coach and move onto another more deserving county.
