Rain to the rescue as Sussex escape with a draw

Sussex have drawn their County Championship clash with Warwickshire after rain completely washed out the final day at Hove.

The umpires called the match to an end at 11.30am on Sunday after just eight overs had been possible on Saturday due to heavy rain.

The conditions helped Sussex get out of a tricky spot after slumping to 80-5 in pursuit of Warwickshire massive first innings total of 545. Sussex picked up five points from the match while Warwickshire collected seven.

Luke Wells, Matt Prior and Murray Goodwin all fell within the space of nine balls of Saturday before the heavens opened again to deny the Bears a chance to push for victory.

It means Sussex have now won one, drawn one and lost one of their opening three games and leaves them joint fourth in division one alongside Surrey and Middlesex.

Sussex play a three-day game against Leeds/Bradford University on Tuesday before taking on West Indies over three days on Saturday.

They return to Championship action at home to Lancashire next Wednesday.

Talk about being saved by the rain. I think I'm right in saying we have won the toss in all three games so far this season and inserted the opposition on each occasion. It worked against Lancs but not in the other two games. Our batting looks decidedly fragile so think we're in for another nail-biting season as we attempt to avoid finishing in the bottom two. County cricket doesn't seem to get much attention these days; no doubt ruined by the England set-up and central contracts.

Yes agree with bruce a very weak looking squad with all supposedly top players failing to post any meaningful runs.Last season we hardly accumulated any batting points and will be same this season.Nash out for his usual 18 and Prior erratic when turning out for Sussex, maybe Goodwin should have left last season. Fingers crossed for survival.
