Sussex v Worcestershire LIVE

This live event has finished

6:23pm

All over. Sussex finish on 325-7. A lead of 163

6:23pm

Right, that's it from me for the day. Sussex's day that's for sure. Will be looking to get a 4th batting point tomorrow and stretch their lead as much as possible. Then it's the turn of the bowlers but the wicket is obviously getting easier to bat on so it won't be so easy this time me thinks! I'm not here tomorrow or Saturday unfortunately but there is a short report of today's play on the website and a full report with pics in The Argus tomorrow.

lochlomond says

OK Steve ... you were right at 1037!

Thanks for an enjoyable day!

I fancy they will bat better second time round and we may have to settle for a draw.

6:18pm

WICKET. Brown gives Moeen the charge and the ball loops up to silly mid-off. IS furious either with himself or the decision. Probably a bit of both as there are only 2 overs to go in the day and to get out like that was a tad wreckless. Made 28. Sussex are 320-7

6:14pm

LEad over 150 now. 3rd batting point in the bag and they are closing in on a fourth. 320-6 with 3 overs remaining today and 9 overs to get to 350 for that extra batting point

5:59pm

300 up for Sussex as Brown cracks a boundary to move on to 24. Magoffin doing a good job on 13 too.

5:28pm

WICKET. Wright edges Andrew to 2nd slip. Good innings but shame he got out then as he was looking to push the score on a bit. Made 78. Magoffin new man. Sussex 275-6

5:25pm

Lead is 109 now. Said at the start of the day if they could get 150 ahead by the close they would be happy. Got 14 overs remaining and runs are flowing at the moment so might be a few more

5:20pm

Apparently Paul Parker made a century in his first match as Sussex captain (v Somerset in 1988). Can anyone confirm that and let me know if anyone else has achieved it in the club's history

5:15pm

He did grind to a halt a bit. Got stuck in the 90s and then struggled against the new ball. Wright is not hanging around though. That's 3 fours off the over from Jones to move on to 77

5:14pm

5:09pm Thu 2 Aug 12

The Real Ryfish says

I was worried Joyce was going to get out as he seemed to disappear into his shell once he got to three figures. Just five runs scored off more than 40 balls faced.

5:11pm

250 up as Wright smashes Jones to the boundary. He's on 73 now and looking in the mood.

5:07pm

WICKET. Joyce's epic innings comes to an end as he is trapped lbw by Richardson. Made 107 which is a fantastic effort. Brown is new man. Sussex 249-5

4:58pm

Worc have taken the new ball and Richardson is back into the attack. Looking dangerous as he beats the edge of Wright's bat. If Sussex can get through the next 15-20 overs tonight without too much damage they are really in the box seat

4:54pm

4:24pm Thu 2 Aug 12

The Real Ryfish says

Alan Wells had the best cover drive I've ever seen. Compare and contrast with Graeme Smith :-)

4:42pm

50 for Wright. Good innings from him as he's been short of runs recently. Century partnership between these two as well. Sussex 232-4

4:40pm

4:19pm

Here we go after tea. Moeen to open down the hill.

4:16pm

4:01pm Thu 2 Aug 12

bruce beckett says

Always enjoyed watching Alan Wells bat but his stats don't compare to Goodwin. Neither do Ted Dexter's, although he oozed class.

4:01pm

That's the 28th century of Joyce's career and his 9th for Sussex. Second of the season too. Just missed out at Trent Bridge in the last game with 98 so the man in form

3:57pm

3:48pm Thu 2 Aug 12

marxo says

Hi all, just got in, what a nice surprise! A bonus point and 2 gold medals!

3:52pm

100 for Joyce! After 26 balls in the 90s Moeen tosses up a full bunger and Joyce sweeps it for 4 to bring up his century. Taken him 217 balls with 12 fours. Considering no one else has made a 50 it's a great effort

3:44pm

3:41pm Thu 2 Aug 12

The Real Ryfish says

I just count myself privileged to have seen Imran, Mushy and Muzza live.

3:41pm

200 up

3:40pm

3:39pm Thu 2 Aug 12

The Real Ryfish says

Not sure from post-war who you could rate higher than Goodwin when it comes to batsmen. So many hundreds, including (I believe) the two highest in Sussex history. He gets my vote.

3:40pm

Joyce moves on to 97. Taking his time in the 90s - that's 17 balls now since he reached 90. Sussex 199-4

3:38pm

3:33pm Thu 2 Aug 12

bruce beckett says

Can't disagree with Mushy or Imran. Not sure about Goodwin, although he has been a tremendous servant to the club over a long period of time and a consistent run scorer every year.

3:37pm

3:29pm Thu 2 Aug 12

lochlomond says

Obviously we disagree with Les' choices, or we would not have suggested others! Mushy was magic for maybe 5 years, but John Snow was pure class and was Sussex born and bred.

Likewise TedDexter as class .. less of a grafter than Murray, but beter to wtch.

3:30pm

Bit of spin now with Moeen having a dip from the top end before tea.

3:28pm

6 for Wright as he pulls Richardson over square leg.

3:27pm

Joyce on to 95 now. Richardson back into the attack.

3:23pm

What do we think of Lenham's choices then. Anyone disagree or is he pretty much spot on?

3:23pm

3:03pm Thu 2 Aug 12

bruce beckett says

If it's a player from Lenham's era, my only other suggestion is Don Bates. But surely not?

3:17pm

Yep, Mushy it is. Mentioned a few others but said he was the reason they won those three titles so gets the nod. Sussex going along nicely here. 176-4 so lead by 14 and Joyce is timing it superbly. He's on 85, Wright 17

2:49pm Thu 2 Aug 12

bruce beckett says

Seriously, it can surely only be Mushy or Snowy. Mushy was the man largely responsible for Sussex winning their first CCC and going on to win two more. He is certainly the greatest I've seen in the last 40 years.

3:02pm

Scores are level now.

2:16pm

Imran was Les's top all-rounder and Goodwin is the best batsman. Just the bowler to go

2:16pm

2:15pm Thu 2 Aug 12

The Real Ryfish says

I'd say Imran has to be there, possibly as best bowler as well as all-rounder. Goodwin has to be up there too. Did Les Lenham play with CB Fry or Ranji? ;-)

2:15pm

WICKET. Yardy gets in an awful mess there and is gone for 33. Think he initially tried to leave it but got a fine edge through to the keeper off Richardson. Good effort by Yardy but poor way to get out. Sussex 126-4. New man is Wright

2:08pm

Got one out of 3 LL. Anyone else want a go

2:07pm

1:43pm Thu 2 Aug 12

lochlomond says

Batsman: Ted Dexter
Bowler: John Snow
All-rounder: Imran Khan

Best team did not include any of them and the first two were in the bottom team in CC more than once!

1:59pm

50 partnership now too between the old and new skipper

1:57pm

50 for Joyce. Off 119 balls so he's had to be watchful. 6x4. REally good effort that. If he can go on to make a hundred that would be the perfect way to launch his captaincy. Sussex 114-3

1:41pm

Here come the players after lunch. Still very cloudy overhead but no rain yet today. Richardson to open the bowling.

1:17pm

anyone want to have a guess who Les Lenham said was the best batsman, allrounder and bowler during his 60 years at Sussex?

1:01pm

That's lunch with Sussex on 104-3. Decent session that in the end on a difficult wicket. Trailing by 58 with 7 wickets in hand. Joyce leading the way on 47 which is the highest score in the match so far. Yardy on 24.

12:57pm

That's the 100 up as Joyce scampers a single. One more over before lunch

12:52pm

Old captain and new captain batting together at the moment and going along quite nicely. Joyce on 42 and Yardy 24. Would be lovely if they could make big scores. Sussex 99-3

12:22pm

WICKET. Goodwin goes for nine. Went back and was trapped lbw by Jones. Think he was unsettled by that rap on the hand a couple of overs earlier. Made 9. Sussex 65-3. Yardy new man so we'll see how he gets on without the burden of captaincy

12:15pm

Sorry everyone. Been speaking to Les Lenham who is celebrating 60 years at Sussex today. Amazingly interesting stuff but went on for a while. While I've been gone Wells has got out, edging Richardson to slip. Goodwin and Joyce digging in. Goodwin having treatment at the moment after being hit on the finger. Sussex 56-2

Morning Steve, morning all. Your 1037 looks like a King Goatmouth! 140 behind means we have avoided the follow on ... that's all!

11:06am

WICKET. Not the start Sussex wanted as Nash has his off stump knocked out of the ground by Richardson in the second over. Played across the line a little, missed and paid the price. Made 18. Sussex 26-1. Wells new man

10:57am

Here come the umpires. Still the dark clouds haven't unloaded on us so we're going to start on time. Hoorah. Spoke to Ed Joyce and Robbo last night and they said the aim was to get 30 overs into the ball so it goes soft and then it becomes easier to bat. Just a case of surviving for the first hour and then trying to push on as there is plenty of pace and bounce in this wicket

10:37am

Good morning and welcome to a damp Hove. Chucked it down on my way here but it's ok now so there's a good chance we'll start on time if there is no more rain. Big day for Sussex if they want to take this game by the scruff of the neck. Begin on 22-0 which is just 140 behind so could build a lead of 150 today all being well
