Jamaican fast bowler Andy Richardson took 3-26 to help Sussex 2nd XI to their first Championship win of the season.

Sussex beat Derbyshire by 19 runs at Derby with the hosts crumbling to 226 all out in pursuit of a target of 246.

The 26-year-old trialist Richardson swung the game on his debut by taking two wickets in two balls as Derbyshire collapsed after being well placed on 225-6 at one stage.

Former Surrey batsman Steve Thorpe top scored with 49 as Derbyshire, who went into the final day with all their second innings wickets standing, failed in their attempt to make the highest total of the match batting last.

Scores: Sussex 191 and 237; Derbyshire 183 and 226.

I was thinking after what appears to have been a good solid all round team performance by the second XI. Our success over the last few years has been built on teamwork every member of the squad playing for eachother. Perhaps though we tend to overrate our younger players and expect too much of them too soon. How many of our young bowlers for example have produced the kind of figures that demand their inclusion in a championship winning side. As admirable as it is to have young players fast tracked into the 1stXI, if they have never had to earn that place through sheer weight of runs or wickets, can we really expect them to make their mark at a higher level. Of course some will but in the main it is only real competition that lifts the standard of the player and what he can achieve. At the moment we do not have that competition for places in certain areas of the team and that is the problem. Players out of form cannot be taken out of the firing line because there is nobody fit and ready to replace them.

Let's not get carried away! Richardson only took three tail end wickets! Let's wait until he and Tsotsobe have taken five wickets in an innings before heaping praise on them. Both have 30 first class games behind them and so should be taking wickets in 2XI!

There is only any point signing Tsotsobe or Richardson if they are better than Collymore, Lewry and Kirtley as we don't need any more change bowlers. We need is someone who can lead the bowling attack.
