Sussex v Yorkshire: Day 1

CLOSE: Yorkshire 274-7 (102)

Good fightback in the last hour by Shahzad and Wainwright who have so far added 65 for the eighth wicket. Shahzad is 35 and Wainwright 39. The new ball leaked runs, as is normally the case on these slow decks, and Sussex looked a bit jaded. I think it has been hard work out there today in that cold breeze. Anyway, it's made it an even-stevens day. Sussex need early wickets and then to bat well. Easy from here isn't it? Back tomorrow with more updates.

WICKET: Yorkshire 227-7 (91.3)

Hamilton-Brown gets the breakthrough when Gale rocks onto the back foot and drives to Gatting at short cover. He made 60 and it was the best innings of the day. He faced 177 balls and hit eight fours. Since then Shahzad has gone on to 21 while David Wainwright is 16. New ball taken now with Lewry and Collymore purveying it. Four overs left but we will probably get a few more in before 5.30pm.

WICKET: Yorkshire 164-6 (67.3)

Fourth wicket for Chawla and just the start Sussex wanted to this session as Brophy shoulders arms to a googly and is bowled for 34. Gale is 36 and Ajmal Shahzad is the new batsman.

TEA: Yorkshire 164-5 (66)

Good recovery this by Gale, who is 36, and Brophy on 34. Chawla still looks the biggest wicket-taking threat but the seamers are providing decent support too. Big session ahead.

Yorkshire 138-5 (57)

Both these batsman could have been out in the last half hour or so. Brophy mis-timed a drive just out of Lewry's reach at mid off during Chawla's excellent spell and then Gale's mis-timed pull off Collymore looped just over Goodwin at square leg. Brophy then edged Collymore just wide of the diving RHB at second slip for four. Gale is 26 and Brophy 22 and the aforementioned Hamilton-Brown has just come on at the sea end, presumably to allow Chawla to change ends.

WICKET: Yorkshire 109-5 (47.2)

Two wickets in three overs for Chawla. He ripped a leg break past McGrath who edged it behind to Hodd for 25. Now Jonathan Bairstow has been foxed by the googly and fell leg before for a duck. Gale is 17 and Gerard Brophy is the new batsman.

Yorkshire 91-3 (36.1)

Lewry and Chawla, bowling up the slope this time, since lunch. McGrath 23, Gale 5 and Sussex could do with nipping one of these two out. Gale is a notoriously bad starter but once he gets in he can do some damage.

LUNCH: Yorkshire 85-3 (32)

Good session that and Sussex will be pleased to have taken three wickets. We had an over of Hamilton-Brown's offies just before the break. McGrath 19, Gale 3. Back in 40 minutes.

WICKET: Yorkshire 81-3 (27.1)

Collymore gets his man as Lyth goes for 50, lbw to a nip-backer which umpire Rob Bailey eventually decided was going to hit the poles. McGrath is 18 and has been joined by Andrew Gale. Great effort this by Collymore who is bowling into a very strong breeze.

Yorkshire 71-2 (23.3)

Collymore back after five overs from Smith but Lyth has reached a somewhat streaky 50 from 61 balls with 10 fours including successive blows to the fence to get to 50 off Smith. Collymore employing a ring field to both batsmen with fielders 10 yards away on both sides for the mis-timed drive on this slow pitch. Lyth 50, McGrath 8.

WICKET: Yorkshire 41-2 (16.1)

Sayers has wasted a good hour's of careful reconnaisance there, coming down the pitch and missing a ball from Chawla which turned and he was smartly stumped by Hodd. Good breakthrough that. Sayers out for 10 from 50 balls. Lyth is 30 and the new batsman is Anthony McGrath.

Yorkshire 41-1 (16)

Smith into his second over after replacing Collymore at the sea end and now Chawla has just come on after seven overs from Lewry. Best time to bat this with the ball still relatively hard and Lyth continues to ride his luck. Collymore thought he'd got him when he was 15 as he padded up but the umpire must have thought it was too high. He is 30 and Sayers 10.

Yorkshire 14-1 (7)

Lyth had a let-off when he inside edged Collymore just to the right of the diving Hodd. That went for 4 and he is now 8. Sayers is no dasher and this slow pitch might be ideal for him. He is 5 but Sussex are keeping things tight.

Morning Loch Lomond. This will probably be Lewry's last game for Sussex here but it's certainly not a sentimental pick and he's already struck in classical Lewry fashion - late inswing with the new ball against the right-hander. Agree Joyce is a big loss. Lot of pressure on the likes of Nash, Goodwin and Yardy and some of the youngsters need to get their heads down as well. If Joyce had been fit Hopkinson would have been dropped. He needs to get runs under pressure.

WICKET: Yorkshire 1-1 (1)

Lewry strikes with his third ball and it's the key wicket of Rudolph who is leg before trying to work an inswinger to leg. Typical Lewry dismissal really and a great start for Sussex. Sayers is 1 and the new batsman is Adam Lyth.

Good morning and welcome to a blustery but sunny Hove for day one of Sussex's Championship game against Yorkshire.

No need to emphasise the importance of this fixture to both sides. Sussex start it four points behind Yorkshire in the second relegation place and defeat would almost certainly consign them to relegation.

Yorkshire have won the toss and will bat and there are four changes to the Sussex side beaten by an innings by Warwickshire last week.

Out go Ed Joyce, who is still struggling with a sore hip, Robin Martin-Jenkins, Ollie Rayner and James Kirtley. They are replaced by Joe Gatting, who will bat at No.3, Rory Hamilton-Brown, who makes only his second Championship appearance of the season, Jason Lewry and fit-again Corey Collymore.

Losing Joyce is a blow but I'm pleased to see Lewry back in the side and Collymore. That's a more potent-looking new ball attack.

Yorkshire have named two spinners with Azeem Rafiq and David Wainwright hoping to exploit any turn. But as has been flagged up since the weekend, this pitch is likely to be slow and low.

Don't forget you can "interact" by leaving comments etc. below. Play due to start at 10.30am.

Sussex: Yardy, Nash, Gatting, Goodwin, Hopkinspon, Hamilton-Brown, Hodd, Smith, Chawla, Collymore, Lewry.

Yorkshire: Rudolph, Sayers, McGrath, Gale, Bairstow, Brophy, Shahzad, Lyth, Wainwright, Hoggard, Rafiq.

Bruce

There was talk beforehand of Aga or even Sandri playing. Jason Lewry has been a great bowler for Sussex, but is he fit enough to bowl more than about a dozen overs in an innings?

Mind you, without Ed Joyce a number of batsmen will need to find some form if we are to manage even a draw batting last. (Are we saving Ed for the Pro40 at Worcester??

David (LochLomond, not Reading!)

Our seam attack is looking ropey for next year, no matter which devision we're in. No Lewry; possibly no Kirtley; Liddle, Aga and Sandri not looking ready to step up yet. Will we still have Collymore and Smith?

Hi Bruce, so once again we take 5 wickets and then struggle to remove the lower order - and Wainwright is to come and always scores well agin us !

Any idea what a 'par' score is ?

This is why we're staring the drop in the face this season. We'd have been all out for 150...Yorkshire will probably make 300-plus now. Another wasted opportunity.

274-7 from 104-5. Not good enough I'm afraid.
