Steven King says Whitehawk must crank it up another gear if they are to beat Dagenham and Redbridge tonight in the biggest game in the club’s history.

The reward for the winners will be a trip to Premier League Everton in the FA Cup third round in early January.

BT Sport’s cameras will be at the Enclosed Ground for the prospect of an upset but Hawks’ experienced manager King says nobody should under-estimate the size of the job his National League south part-timers have in front of them if they are to cause a huge shock and secure a clash at the Toffees which could earn the club close to £1 million.

The delight at such a high-profile draw has got fans dreaming of a trip to Merseyside with the Daggers third from bottom in League Two.

But manager King warned: “This is the most important game ever for the club and I know it is going to be a tough, tough game.

“There are a lot of people who are saying we can do this and we can do that but I don’t think they know how tough this is.

“Whatever way you look at it, they are two leagues above us and they are a Football League side.

“They train every single day while we are a part-time team who train once or twice a week depending on whether we have a game or not. That will play a factor.

“They have Football League players, who did not perform very well when we played them the first time, while we performed to a decent level.

“I still think there is another gear in us but it is on the day. It may be a cliche but it comes down to how you perform on the day.

“We are capable of beating them obviously, and they know that, but they are capable as well.”

Substitute Jordan Rose booked tonight’s replay with a last-gasp header in the first game but King insists Hawks must hit their stride from the first whistle against Wayne Burnett’s side if they are to progress.

King said: “We need to start better than we did in the first game. We were a bit apprehensive and only came into the game and got our passing going in the last 15 minutes of the half.

“At half-time I gave them a talking to and said, ‘Where have you been?’ “We had come alive in that last 15 minutes and I said if we were going to go out we needed to do it in the right way and by having a right go at them.

“And we dominated the whole of the second half, with the shots on targets and chances we should have won the game.

“We know if we turn up as a group we are capable of winning.

“We have got to play with no fear. We play expansive no fear football and that’s what we shall have to produce against them at home.”

While King is urging his players to crank up their performance a notch, he is already confident the supporters will be taking the fervour to another level.

King said: “I can imagine the atmosphere already. It’s going to be incredible.

“Win or lose, they are going to make you know you have been in an FA Cup tie and make it an experience that will never be forgotten.

“I saw the crowd against Lincoln and I think they are going to take it up another gear.

“I expect there will also be almost double in there as well.

“I feel there will be another level of support from the 1300 against Lincoln.”

King admits the prize of Everton awaiting in the next round is on everyone’s minds but also insists it should only serve to focus the minds on beating the Daggers.

He said: “You can’t look further than this game. You have to take it one game at a time. What’s the point at looking at B when you haven’t got past A?”

But keeping the players’ feet on the ground is not easy with the buzz around the club building by the hour – and demands for his thoughts from the media at a new high.

King revealed: “Papers, radio, it’s gone crazy and everyone just wants the game to come.

“Win or lose, it’s going to be a day that people are never going to forget.

“It’s the first time they have been live on telly ever, so there is another bit of history.”
