Worthing are through to their first Parafix Sussex Senior Cup for nine years after beating Whitehawk on penalties at Culver Road.

The Rebels won 5-4 in a shootout thanks in part to two saves from Jack Fagan, who also converted a spot-kick.

That sparked wild celebrations for the Rebels who fought valiantly throughout a match which ended 2-2 after extra-time.

Worthing bossed the opening exchanges but wasted an opportunity to go ahead on 11 minutes when Brannon O’Neill’s penalty was comfortably saved by Craig Ross after Juan Cruz Gotta bundled over Tom Pope.

Eight minutes later the Rebels were ahead with Pope firing home seconds after O’Neill had rattled the crossbar from 20 yards.

Five minutes before half-time Whitehawk levelled when Danny Mills headed home David Martin’s cross from the left.

Martin was involved again as the National League south side went ahead on 51 minutes, Jake Robinson finished well from close range after Cruz Gotta headed on Martin’s corner.

Pope wasted a great chance to equalise with 19 minutes remaining but Worthing were not finished.

On 84 minutes David Ijaha sold Ross slightly short with a back pass, Pope nipped in and centred for Lloyd Dawes to bury his 27th goal of the season.

Extra-time could not separate the sides, the best chance being a shot from Omar Bugiel which was saved low down by Ross.

In the shootout, Fagan saved from both Sergio Torres and youngster Lucas Santos Rodrigues.
