Eastbourne Borough are likely to appeal against the red card which cast a shadow over their encouraging weekend.

Elliott Romain was sent off 13 minutes after his goal secured a 1-1 draw at East Thurrock.

Boss Tommy Widdrington reviewed footage shortly after the game and planned to sleep on a decision as to whether he would appeal.

Initial indications were that he was likely to contest the decision.

Borough had one of their academy players filming the game, as is their standard practice.

Assistant boss Hugo Langton said: “We’ve watched it back and we think the straight red card is very harsh.

“The ball was played in behind them. Elliott ran with a defender and the defender just stopped and they collided.

“They were saying it was an elbow but it does not look like that on the video.”

Romain dragged his side level on 64 minutes by smashing home a header across goal by Gavin McCallum.

Borough started the game slowly but Langton said: “We were the better side with ten men.

“That has been a good sign and hopefully backs up the way we worked on our fitness in pre-season.

“We looked at the longer term and we have been getting stronger as games have gone on.”

Mark Hughes almost grabbed the winner in a scramble.

The result followed Borough’s 0-0 draw with much fancied Ebbsfleet on Saturday.

Langton added: “On another weekend we could have come away with six points instead of two.”
