Boss Tommy Widdrington insists it has been a good season despite Eastbourne Borough’s play-off hopes fading away.

Three defeats in the space of six days means Borough’s hopes of finishing in the top five are virtually over ahead of their home game against FA Trophy finalists Gosport Borough.

The Priory Lane outfit had spent the majority of the season in or around the play-off positions but Widdrington believes a run of postponements in January and February ultimately scuppered their chances.

Borough started March with genuine hopes of reaching the end of season shoot-out but a gruelling schedule of 11 games in 36 days – seven of which were away – has taken its toll.

Widdrington said: “It has not been a great week for us in terms of results but we have got four games left and we want to finish the season as positively as we can to put us in good stead for next season.

“We’d have to win all four of our remaining games and hope other results go our way to get in the play-offs now.

“But wherever we finish it has been a pretty good season when you consider in the last three or four seasons the club has gone into the last few games still needing points to stay in whichever division they were in.

“There is a lot to be said for having stability and security and from that point of view we have moved on this year. We might even have still been in with a shout but for all the postponements which were a massive disadvantage for us.”

Adam Watts picked up a calf strain in the 3-1 defeat at Boreham Wood on Wednesday night and joins fellow midfielder Chris Shephard (thigh) on the injury list today.
