Steven King insists Whitehawk are still “alive and kicking” in their bid to beat the drop despite their precarious position in Conference South.

The Hawks’ slipped back into the bottom three on Tuesday night when they suffered a 2-1 defeat at play-off outsiders Staines Town.

Their plight improved on Thursday when Maidenhead played one of their games in hand and slipped to a 3-1 home defeat against Concord Rangers.

Tonbridge Angels also failed to take advantage of a game in hand as they were beaten 2-0 at home by Dover.

But Chelmsford did rescue a point with a 90th-minute goal against Bishop’s Stortford.

King, who was at Tonbridge's game, remains confident there will be a lot of twists and turns before the bottom three is finally settled, especially as many of the clubs involved in the battle are playing sides with something at stake.

And he reckons Hawks are capable of turning over any side in the division as they prepare to go to Boreham Wood today.

King said: “We feel that we can beat the drop and we’re upbeat.

“There are a number of teams who can get relegated and we’re one of them – it’s as simple as that.

“We knew when we came in that we were in that position but I think there are probably five teams who can get relegated now.

“The second and third relegation places are between Tonbridge, Maidenhead, us, Hayes and Yeading and Chelmsford. It will be two from those five.

“Maidenhead’s last three games are Bromley, Ebbsfleet and Havant. I think Tonbridge probably have the toughest run in while Hayes and Yeading have games in hand but they have to be won. None of them are givens either.”

He added: “I know this division inside out and nobody has really beaten us, if that makes sense."
