Boss Tommy Widdrington has urged Eastbourne Borough fans to support Matt Smart’s testimonial.

Smart played 461 games for Borough after signing from Horsham in 2001.

The midfielder played a huge role in the club’s rise to the top tier of non-league football, where they stayed for three seasons, but he was released at the end of the 2011-12 campaign.

He finished his career with Ryman south side Leatherhead before retiring at the end of last season.

Borough will visit Leatherhead for Smart's testimonial on Wednesday July 30.

Widdrington said: “He was a very good player for Eastbourne. It is not too long a journey up the A23 and I hope the Borough faithful will go there on the 30th to support Matt.”

Borough open their pre-season campaign away to FA Vase semi-finalists Eastbourne United on July 12 before visiting Crawley Down Gatwick three days later.

They then travel to Tonbridge Angels (July 19) and Hastings United (July 22) before rounding off their preparations for the new campaign at home to Lewes on Saturday August 2.
