Lewes reached the semi-finals of the Sussex Senior Cup after beating ten-man Eastbourne Borough 2-1 after extra time at the Dripping Pan.

Nicky Wheeler scored what proved to be the winner early in the first period of extra time to complete a deserved victory for the Rooks.

It was also a special win for Lewes boss Garry Wilson who used to manage Borough.

The home side went ahead following a lovely move in the 14th minute. A delightful interchange between Tom Davis and Henry Muggeridge ended with the latter crossing invitingly for Elliott Romain to fire home from close range.

The Rooks had the ball in the net again on 23 minutes but Ollie Rowe’s close-range finish from fellow Borough old boy Sam Cole’s cross was chalked off for offside.

Conference south side Borough drew level in the 39th minute from a coolly converted Frankie Raymond penalty after Sam Crabb had bundled over Darren Lok.

Lewes were in the ascendancy for most of the second half but could not find a way past Lewis Carey in the visitors’ goal.

Borough were reduced to ten men nine minutes from the end of normal time when Marvin Hamilton was sent off for a second bookable offence but they held on to force extra time.

Two minutes into the extra 30 Lewes went back in front when a low shot from Wheeler was deflected past Carey.
