Steve Brown does not want his Lewes players to think they are almost safe from relegation.

Instead, interim boss Brown has urged his squad to aim to finish as high as they can in Ryman premier.

The Rooks moved seven points clear of the drop zone with six games to play after a young line-up beat Enfield Town 2-1 on Wednesday.

Two more wins would almost certainly see them safe but Brown said: “If you get to 53 points you would think that is enough but I want to be pushing for a result in every game we play. That is what I’m asking.

“I don’t want anyone to think we are safe and that is enough.

“We are not a million miles away from making it mathematically safe but as a group you want to be aiming to win as many games as you can between now and the end of the season.”

Canadian midfielder Emmett O’Connor scored the winner on his debut against Enfield after joining on a month’s loan from League One Crawley Town.

Brown was pleased with his contribution. He said: “Emmett’s game is about attacking in the final third. On Wednesday he showed another side of his game, which was helping the team perform in a disciplined manner. He did more of that than the bits we know he does well – something he showed with the goal. You can say he put in a shift for the team.

“Physically he might need to adapt to this level a little bit. You don’t get as much time on the ball but his game is tidy.”

Matt Crabb returns from suspension as Lewes visit VCD Athletic today and there is a chance Ollie Rowe could be fit to play.

But new boy George Brown is not available and Nicky Wheeler (foot), Arron Hopkinson (ankle) and Luke Blewden (thigh) are all doubts.
