Worthing will celebrate the end of an era when they host Whyteleafe today.

The match will be the last ever on grass at Woodside Road.

Work starts on Monday to begin work on the installation of a 3G pitch at the ground which will be in place by the start of next season.

A green light was finally given to the plans following the recent takeover by George Dowell, a 22-year-old former player who used his compensation money from a car crash which left him in a wheelchair to save the club from going bust.

A number of former players have been invited to the game.

Director Ian Hart said: “It is a landmark day in the club’s history and poignant in that we were nearly history ourselves.

“While we are looking back with the diggers coming in on Monday, it is also time to look forward for the club to realise its potential under the stewardship of George Dowell.”
