Peacehaven chairman Brian Suckling admits losing Darren Freeman was always a possibility.

The Magpies are on the search for a new manager following the departure of Freeman and his assistant Ross Standen to Lewes.

Suckling has no immediate candidates in mind but is hoping a new manager will work with respected coach Tony Coade, who also runs the club’s academy.

Freeman was only appointed in August, taking over from Coade who reverted to coach.

Coade will be in caretaker charge tonight when Peacehaven visit South Park in Ryman south.

Suckling said: “We are disappointed to see Darren and Ross go. They have done a fantastic job in a short space of time.

“Realistically I knew if a bigger club were to come in for him it would be a very difficult situation and decision that Darren would have to make.

“I know from talking to him how difficult it was. Right up until last night (Tuesday) he was still thinking of staying with us and seeing the job through. But equally here is an opportunity to go to a bigger club, a well supported club, and this opportunity might not come around again.

“Darren goes with our blessing. It is business as usual and we are looking to bring in a replacement as soon as possible.”

Suckling is aware of supporters’ fears that players Freeman brought to Peacehaven could follow him to Lewes.

He is also hoping Coade does not decide to work again with Freeman and Standen at the Dripping Pan.

Suckling added: “We will do everything we can to retain the players at the club and the coaches as well. Tony has a big role to play at the club, he runs the academy and has the club at heart.”
