Charman joins Borough injury list

Eastbourne Borough have been dealt a fresh injury blow ahead of tonight’s trip to Dartford.

Gary Charman, who was named man-of-the-match in Saturday’s 1-1 opening day draw with Farnborough, has been ruled out for up to three weeks with a torn calf.

The summer signing from Horsham, who is best known as a wide midfielder, played centre-back on Saturday due to Borough’s injury problems which include the long-term absence of defenders Ben Austin and Matt Langston.

He had performed the role in pre-season and impressed Borough fans with a whole-hearted display but manager Garry Wilson must now look elsewhere for a centre-back partner for Saturday’s goal hero Gary Elphick.

Wilson could turn to another summer signing, Ollie Rowe, who returned to the club from Hastings in May and was on the bench on Saturday.

Another option is Eddie Hutchinson who was sent off after the final whistle on Saturday following a melee at the end of the game.

Hutchinson’s automatic three-match ban does not start until August 27 under Conference south rules. Last season, in Blue Square Bet premier, his suspension would have been immediate.

The absence of Charman does not help Borough who are also currently without former Albion stalwart Gary Hart, fellow forward Carl Rook and wide attacker Ross Treleaven.

Head coach Nick Greenwood said: “Gary played well in the first half on Saturday and did some good defending in the second half when we struggled as a team.

“It is a shame for him because he only made his debut on Saturday and now he is out for a few games.”
