Lewes starlet signs for Pompey
12:00pm Monday 29th August 2011 in Ryman Premier Table & Results By Howard Griggs
Lewes starlet Jed Wallace has signed a three-year contract at Portsmouth.
Manager Steven King revealed the news after watching his side make it back-to-back with a 2-1 success at home to Billericay Town which moved them up to eighth in Ryman premier.
Wallace, 17, followed King to Lewes from Farnborough in the summer and featured in two pre-season friendlies but the Rooks boss knew he was destined for bigger things.
Premier League Newcastle were keen to sign him but Wallace has chosen to join Portsmouth.
King said: “Newcastle were all over him to go up there but he passed his medical at Portsmouth on Saturday and has signed a three-year deal. I said all along he would become a professional.
“We are not entitled to any fee but Steve Cotterill (Portsmouth) manager) has said he will bring his full first team down for a pre-season friendly next year which will be worth a decent amount of money to us.”

Give a player away to Portsmouth ‘then Portsmouth will probably sell him for 10 million pounds to Newcastle next season.
This is why small grass roots football clubs are finding it hard to balance the books.
Each season more lower league clubs are going down the dripping pan due to no money.
The FA should set up a fund in which a percentage made from lower league players on transfers should be put in the pot to be shared out to lower league clubs below conference each year ‘so giving them a life line to produce more home grown talent for the greedy higher league clubs to poach..
It doesn’t seem fair. These small clubs coach youngsters from youth and once they break into the first team a scout comes along ‘offers them better money’ and the club which has put time, money and energy into producing the player gets stitched up.
FA.. Sort it out or more smaller clubs will be going into receivership.
Yours faithfully
