Eastbourne came from ten points down to keep their Elite League play-off hopes very much alive tonight.
They lost just 47-46 at Lakeside in the first leg of their semi-final.
Eagles had just four heat wins but the first of them, by Lewis Bridger on a tactical ride, sparked a revival from 23-13 down.
Wins for Cameron Woodward helped secure 4-2s in heats 12 and 14 to edge Eastbourne into a one point lead.
Lee Richardson then fronted a Hammers 4-2, his fourth win of the night, in the nominated race to ensure Hammers will take a slender lead to East Sussex next Monday.
Simon Gustafsson was Eagles' other heat winner and scored in all five of his races.
Lakeside: Richardson 12 (5), Davidsson 12 (6), Robson 8+1 (5), Ljung 7 (5), Nilsson 5 (5), Mear 3 (4), Swiderski r/r.
Eagles: Woodward 11+1 (7), Bridger 10^ (5), Gustafsson 9+1 (5), Kylmakorpi 6+2 (4), Pedersen 6 (5), Lahti 4+2 (4), Dryml r/r.
