Sussex have hit all-rounder Ashar Zaidi with a suspended one-match ban for criticising an umpire's decision on Twitter during the defeat to Somerset this week.

Zaidi has also apologised for posting "#stinker #wtf" after being given out caught behind by Nigel Llong in the first innings of the Championship match at Hove.

Sussex have taken immediate action against the 32-year-old with the ban being triggered if he breaks the club's disciplinary code again this season.

A club statement said: "Following a Twitter-related incident concerning Ashar Zaidi on Tuesday 29th April during the match against Somerset, Sussex County Cricket Club have disciplined Zaidi in accordance with the club's disciplinary procedures.

“Ashar Zaidi has been given a suspended one match suspension for the 2014 season. Zaidi has apologised for his behaviour and regrets his actions deeply.”

Zaidi has struggled in the opening three games of the season, making just 14 runs in three innings and taking three wickets.

The former Pakistan A international signed a two-year contract in the winter after impressing on trial at the end of last season.
