Ronnie Davies felt Chris Eubank Junior’s slow start cost him the chance of title glory against big fight rival Billy Joe Saunders.

Brighton middleweight Eubank Jr, 25, lost on a split decision to British, European and Commonwealth champion Saunders at the ExCel London despite a stirring late charge.

Former two-weight world champion Chris Eubank senior and trainer Davies worked Junior’s corner for the 12-round WBO world middleweight eliminator.

Saunders had the better of the early rounds on most people’s cards and Davies felt that was pivotal.

Davies, 68, said: “I was disappointed with the way he fought.

“I told him to get the early rounds in the bank against Saunders and was disappointed that he gave the first rounds away.

“I said before the fight that he can’t afford to give the early rounds away because then you have to win two fights - the first to wipe out the lead and then a second to take the fight.”
