Chris Eubank Junior is expected to make the first defence of his interim WBA world middleweight belt next month.

Irish fighter Gary ‘Spike’ O’Sullivan should be his challenger at Wembley Arena on May 9.

The show is also likely to feature Eubank Jr’s arch-rival Billy Joe Saunders.

Eubank Jr, 25, from Brighton, won the belt in February when he stopped defending champion Dmitry Chudinov at the 02 Arena, London.

O’Sullivan, 30, has been pursuing him for months and the Eubank camp confirmed they have been in negotiations.

An official announcement is expected tomorrow.

O’Sullivan is a risky fight for Eubank Jr as 13 of his 20 wins have come within the distance including winning inside the first three rounds in each of his last three fights.

The only defeat for the Cork-based boxer was against Saunders in 2013 on a unanimous points decision for the WBO international middleweight title.

Saunders has goaded Eubank Jr on social media and told him he must fight O’Sullivan first if he wants a rematch and a chance to avenge his split decision defeat last year.

Their clash last November caught the public imagination and the feud shows no signs of cooling.

Saunders is the mandatory and No.1 ranked contender for the WBO middleweight title but stepped aside to allow world champion Andy Lee to make a voluntary title defence against Peter Quillin on April 11.

Promoter Warren is keen for Saunders to win the WBO belt and pave the way for a huge unification rematch with Eubank Jr with his WBA belt on the line at a later date.
