The conduct of Chris Eubank Jr and his father has been defended following a scathing attack by Nick Blackwell.

Blackwell claimed the actions of the Eubanks was “inhuman” and “disgusting” following the clash which left him fighting for his life in March.

The 25-year-old has accused the duo of milking publicity in the aftermath of the British middleweight win which ended with him being placed in an induced coma.

But former world heavyweight title challenger Scott Welch has leapt to the defence of the Brighton family – insisting they have acted impeccably.

Blackwell used an interview in The Sun to claim the Eubanks tried to “grab as much attention as they could” after they hosted a press conference three days after the tenth-round stoppage win with the Trowbridge fighter still in a coma.

Blackwell said: “I haven’t any hard feelings about the fight because you’re in there to win and try and hurt someone – it’s just the stuff he has done after. It’s inhuman, it’s disgusting.

‘’My family and friends were begging them not to talk, but they ignored it. I’ve only just been shown the press conference and I know exactly what happened. It isn’t human what they’ve done.

‘’I was still in a coma but they went ahead and did it.

‘’That’s the Eubanks, isn’t it? They just want attention, no matter if it’s a bad or a good thing.

‘’If Chris Jr was in a coma and I wanted to do a press conference on the Tuesday and their family was begging me not to do it, I would not do it.”

But former British and Commonwealth heavyweight champion Welch, who visited the Eubank dressing room after the fight, insists Blackwell’s accusations are unfair.

He told The Argus: “I don’t agree with Blackwell’s comments and they were well within their rights to do what they did.

“They have handled the situation like complete gentlemen.

“Everything they have done, father and son, have acted with the highest professionalism.

“They have not slagged anyone off and everything they have said has been on the button.

“But Eubank Jr is on a journey and the same thing could happen to Chris down the line, you just don’t know because this is boxing. It is a dangerous game.

“Chris has done everything he could. He has spoken to him on Twitter, he has offered the hand of friendship and offered to go and see him and they have not taken it. He can only do as much as he did.”

And Welch also disputes Blackwell’s claims Eubank Jr should have gone to the hospital on the night, claiming the pre-fight antics in the ring when WBO middleweight champion waved the British title belt in Eubank Jr and his father’s face were disgusting.

Welch said: “The way they acted that night, do I think they would have gone to visit Chris in hospital if the boot was on the other foot? I don’t think they would have been anywhere near.”

Eubank Jr, 26, defended the decision to face the media.

He told The Sun: “People and media demanded that we speak to them. If we had just said ‘No comment’ it would have come off as cold.

“If Nick is part of the small percentage that took offence, that’s unfortunate. It’s sad for me to hear something like that.

“All I have ever wanted for Nick has been the best. The fight was all the publicity that was needed. It was a great British tussle and such a shame it ended like that. Anything that happened after that was not for our gain.

“People deserve our side of the story and our perspective on things – that’s all it was.”
