Johanna Konta is celebrating a double after knocking two-time former Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova out of Eastbourne.

The British No. 1 is through to the quarter-finals of her home town tournament for the second year running.

Konta’s stunning comeback victory in three sets against Kvitova at the Aegon International came hours after she was seeded 17 at Wimbledon, one higher than her current world ranking.

She is the first British woman to be seeded at the All England Club since Jo Durie in 1984.

Konta was down at 146 when she reached the last eight at Eastbourne last summer.

The Argus:

Durie, pictured, said: “It’s mad really. Who’d have thought it? Incredible. What Jo has done in the last 12 months is just astounding. It has caught a lot of us by surprise but it has been so good.

“Heather Watson has been ranked as high as 38, Laura Robson 27, so we’ve had that.

“But to break the top 20 is something else. You’ve got to be consistently good week after week.”

Konta said of success over Kvitova: “It’s definitely one of my biggest wins, even though I don’t think she’s in the top ten this week (Kvitova is 11). She has been a top ten player or top five for years and years now.”

Konta’s quarter-final opponent will be 2010 champion Ekaterina Makarova or Andrea Petkovic. Rain called a halt to their last 16 clash last night in the second game.
