Top seed Elena Dementieva was another victim on a day of shocks at Eastbourne.
The world No.4 lost 6-0, 3-6, 7-6 to Virginie Razzano as the light faded on centre court.
Razzano will meet defending champion Agnieszka Radwanska in the quarter-finals.
Radwanska was leading 3-1 against Na Li when the Chinese world No.19 retired with an abdominal injury.
Meanwhile, British pair Sarah Borwell and Anne Keothavong went out of the doubles 7-6, 6-4 to Akgul Amnanmuradova and Ai Sugiyama.
