Motorists are likely to suffer serious delays as the A27 is closed for up to five weekends.

The A27 has long been plagued with traffic jams and delays.

But engineering works are scheduled for the bridge over the railway line at Arundel which will completely close it to traffic in both directions.

The closures will be from 8pm on Fridays until 6am on Mondays for up to five weekends, starting in September.

A diversion will take traffic from the A27 at Crossbush, down the A284 to Littlehampton through Lyminster and Wick, along the A259 to Bognor and then up the A29 and back on to the A27 at Fontwell.

Traders in Arundel are worried that they will suffer a drop in takings as people will be unable to get to the town from the east without taking the diversion.

Jonathan Brantigan, joint owner of independent delicatessen Pallant Of Arundel, said: "The issue was brought up at our chamber of trade meeting and members were very concerned about these closures.

"September is effectively another month of summer in the calendar and Arundel is as busy as ever then."

The diversion is expected to cause traffic jams in Littlehampton as well, as the town's roads struggle to cope with the increased volume of traffic.

The first weekend of work coincides with the Littlehampton Town Show on September 13 at the Rosemead Recreation Ground where the town's roads will already be packed with vehicles.

People taking short cuts through the town and around the diversion up Ford Road are also expected to add to the problems.

The bridge, which carries the road over the Arun Valley railway line, needs waterproofing and resurfacing.

A spokesman for the Highways Agency said the work was "essential"

and that it was hoped it would be completed in three weekends rather than the five scheduled.

He said: "This is essential safety work which needs to be carried out.

"The bridge needs resurfacing and waterproofing and while that is being done we will also be repairing any damaged brickwork.

"The reason we are closing the road for whole weekends is that we want to complete the work in the shortest amount of time and we have been careful to keep the A27 open at peak times.

"We hope to be able to get it finished well within the five weekends and we are committed to limiting delays when carrying out roadworks.

"Although this may seem like a long time to close the road, it's the best way of carrying out this work."

The work is expected to be carried out from September 12 to 15 and 26 to 29, October 10 to 13 and 17 to 20. The final weekend would see the bridge closed from October 31 to November 3.

Whoever or whatever is stopping the Arundel by-pass being completed needs their heads sorting out - that road needs improving urgently full stop - why not make a tunnel like the Southwick tunnel at Arundel? you wont spoil the country side that way and surely everyone would be happy - its already prepared at the crossbush intersection all you would need is a massive tunnel borer like the one use for the channel tunnel and it could come up at the roundabout going towards Chichester which needs improvement as well - get it done us motorist have to put up with traffic jams every day in that area its not fair - whoever did it would get my vote.

"The reason we are closing the road for whole weekends is that we want to complete the work in the shortest amount of time and we have been careful to keep the A27 open at peak times." So weekends in September on the only major road through the area isn't a peak time then???

It's not very appealing as a solution but it is one.

If the bridge collapsed due to a lack of maintenance, then there would be even more moaning.

You just can't please all the people all the time.

The Arundel By-pass does indeed need to be started but the woodlands it will cut through are a very pleasant part of the countryside there which would be a shame to have a road through, can it not be routed a bit further south?

Sadly not, that's where the Econ Town is going

The old runway would give a good route for the road. It would probably make the project cheaper. Though some smart planner would probably insist on digging it up first.

The Arundel bypass must be completed. The loss of a tiny amount of land (which the public has not access to) is not a big deal and the road can be screened off with trees. People's daily lives matter more than tiny amounts of land (in the overall scheme of things). Viewed from the air (instead of from the road) the amount of land used for roads is extremely small. All maps diagrammatically enlarge the true size by a factor of at least 100 to make it visible.

What about my suggestion on the first post of a tunnel similar to the southwick tunnel. No land would be spoilt that way. With all the traffic going through that way the countryside is poluted anyway - this is not really about the countryside anyway is it? if a by-pass was put in the Arundel shops would lose out I expect thats what its all about.

Eh Bobby with clear vision like that you should be in Government. Think it's that simple do ya? Cheaper to let the oil price go up and force cars off the road, then build nothing.

All we need now is for Network Rail to schedule "essential" engineering work at the same time, Where will the replacement buses stop?

As someone who works at Ford and who knows the area, I was appalled when the Arundel by-pass was canned on the eve of its construction. Excuses ranged from rare breeds of toads that nest in the river banks to the usual 'on my god we are cutting down more trees'! Surely the toads would have hopped along the bank a few yards while the bridge foundations were being built? We were also aware that the Swampy and all his eco?-mates were turning up in all their old smelly Mercedes vans to camp in the trees. But they would have been wasting their time, because if one bothers to walk in these woods, they will find that an awfull lot of the trees have already been cleared.
