Yardy blow for Sussex

Mike Yardy has joined Sussex's growing injury list.

The county's vice captain will need a painkilling injection to ease the discomfort caused by tennis elbow.

Coach Mark Robinson expects him to play in the Championship match against Nottinghamshire next week, but he will probably miss the three Friends Provident Trophy games in four days at the end of the month.

Coach Mark Robinson said: "It is hindering him a bit. We are going to have to get him injected at some point and we might have to do it in the one-day window because the injection will need time to settle down.

"He has been suffering from tennis elbow all season and it is inhibiting the way he wants to play at different times. It's not nice to play with continued discomfort and Yards really felt it yesterday."

Robinson expects Matt Prior to have fully recovered from the hairline finger fracture he suffered on Wednesday in time for the trip to Trent Bridge while Mushtaq Ahmed is on course to return after three weeks out following knee surgery.

Yardy battled through the pain to score his first Championship half-century of the season at Taunton yesterday but Sussex followed on 354 behind after being dismissed for 203.

Robinson said: "It was disappointing but we played in rain and light that was barely playable. The weather has played a big part. "

What a load of cobblers, this choice was self inflicted,it was Sussex 's choice to bowl first,did the coach not have the foresight to look at weather forecasts. What a sorry state of affairs to blame conditions and not lack of fight and poor shot selection and lakc of penetration by bowlers. Why not just admit this was an almighty c**k up.

Blaming the conditions is a poor excuse and certainly doesn't excuse the poor shot selection and lack of application by our or the lack of penetration of our bowlers.

Here we go.......
Sussex have over achieved for years, winning three championships and a C and G Trophy in the last 5 years - now they have a couple of poor performances and people want to slaughter them. It is the same old, same old. It represents everything that is wrong with "supporters" in this country. After the Ryan Harris debacle, Sussex do have problems this season what with injuries and potential international call ups. Hopefully a bit of hot weather and Mushy bowling as well as ever will change things round. KEEP THE FAITH!

Well maybe the lads can redeem themselves with a good rearguard action today. It has been an awful start to the season and as far as I'm concerned an all too predictable one. Yes Sussex have massively overachieved in recent years but failure to address the imbalance in the squad meant that, were we to suffer a series of injuries we would struggle. We must be the only one of all the first class counties not to have a recognized opening batsman on the staff. Add to that no real pace in attack and it is not too difficult to see why we have struggled. Unless the Aussies Kolpak it will be difficult for us to address these issues before next season. However I think it is a must that we restore a left right combination at the top of the order as it unsettles bowlers As Yardy is the only lefthanded batsman on the staff then he should move up one place. I think Collymore is a useful addition to our bowling resources, though hardly offers the pace that we require and is not likely to contribute many late order runs. We need to be making plans to add another 2 players of quality to the squad next season whether anybody leaves or not.

Jonboy - what do you mean by 'recognised' opener? Both Nash and Hoppo have spent the vast majority of their careers opening... does this not mean they are openers? And the idea that having left and right-handers unsettles bowlers is a myth - it happens all the way down the order in most teams. It's not as if bowlers aren't used to it.

What I mean is that neither of the pair until recent years were considered opening batsmen and only ended up there by default. I do think Nash may develop into one but I feel Hoppo's best position is a little further down the order. For sure he can operate there in an emergency. As you say both of them have spent the vast majority of their careers playing there, in fact some 120 matches with not one century between them.

I've never been entirely convinced with Hopkinson, although he seems a bit more consistent this season, but for a relative youngster Nash's average is only about 5 runs short of being decent.

The problem lies entirely with our opening bowlers. One has 1 for 196 and the other 1 for 226.
We must currently be the worst opening bowler attack in either of the divisions. A big allround improvement is needed if we are to win a game this season

I agree with Jeffrey our problems this season are to do with the opening bowlers. I don't see Lewry, Kirtley or Collymore as an option beyond this season. There is no real pace in the attack at the moment which is a problem.

I agree with Jonboy two new players are needed but would differ from his suggestion of an opening batsmen and an opening bowler slightly by saying we need two quality new ball bowlers instead. Two performing new ball bowlers are better than three new ball bowlers!

I think what Jonboy is trying to say is that neither Nash or Hopkinson are experienced openers. However, I don't see the opening partnership or our batting for that matter as a problem at the moment.

Jonboy - Hopkinson has to open because Sussex have a very settled middle order of Yardy, Goodwin, Adams and Prior.

As for the need for more left handed batsmen on the staff we have two 17 year olds in the Sussex Acdemy in Matt Machan and Luke Wells who may in two years time join the staff if they continue to develop at the rate they have been.

Young Yardy has tennis elbow !!!!! Has Coach Robboson lost control ?, he should be ensuring that our esteemed players are not grunting, lobbing and deucing until at least Wimbledon when the weather will be warmer, warmer rain that is. Next thing we will hear is that our playing staff are having Association Football warm ups before playing, by thunder, I didn't get where I am today by playing namby pamby powder puff 'sports' when I should have been concentrating on pig sticking and cricket. Sort it out chappies, no more tennis !
