The first of two nights organised by Brighton-based Fat Cat records was a varied affair which reflected the label's diversity.
Live music is a rarity at the Theatre Royal and Fat Cat selected a suitably sophisticated roster to grace the surroundings.
Ambient German pianist Haushka opened proceedings with an inventive take on musical structure but too often strayed into selfindulgent obscurity.
The wholesome North Dakotan Tom Brosseau was a more engaging prospect with his softly spoken storytelling and excellent range. Although he appeared like a lost member of The Waltons, his deftly constructed songs revealed a character far worldlier. His gentle humility was well received by the crowd and provided the evening's highlight.
After 30 years in the wilderness, whispy folk songstress Vashti Bunyan was the evening's big draw.
