Reviewing music can be a tricky business.

Most new bands are a mish mash of influences and it's hard not to simply compare them to artists past and present.

The amazing thing about The Portico Quartet is that their sound is so original that there's no one else quite like them.

What makes them so distinctive is their use of an instrument called The Hang, which sounds a bit like a steel drum.

Nick Mulvey coaxes delicate chimes from the domed metal pans, creating a mystical sound which has an almost weightless, underwater quality.

Festival music programmer Guy Morley spotted this exceptional young four-piece busking in London, and now they're one of the most exciting new jazz ensembles in the country.

Such was the buzz about this lunchtime concert that, although it had completely sold out, there was still a long queue outside the Pavilion Theatre just hoping for returns.

Their debut album Knee-Deep In The North Sea is the must-have album for 2008, and this incredibly talented group look set to redefine the contemporary jazz scene with their exquisite and hypnotic sound.
