There are not many actors who can boast a 70-year career on the stage and silver screen.
But Leslie Phillips can and his appearance showed there is much more to him than a neatly clipped moustache and a voice which can snap knicker elastic at 20 paces.
The conversation with journalist Simon Fanshawe took in the whole of his career, from starting out as the bread-winner of his family at the age of 14 to his recent Bafta-nominated role in Venus.
In spite of Fanshawe's attempts to keep him on subject, Phillips rambled endearingly through his war-time experiences and spoke warmly about former co-stars, including Peter O'Toole, Rex Harrison, Kenneth Williams and Kay Kendall.
There were flashes of his risque wit throughout, with the only signs of age appearing when he tried to remember dates and names of plays he had been in, leading to disputes with Fanshawe about the truth of his own autobiography.
It would be hard to find anyone who wasn't charmed by the man once described as Britain's favourite phallic symbol.
