Alabama 3, Parlure Spiegeltent, Brighton, May 14

Alabama 3 are on a mission to prove the coolness of country music didn't die out when Johnny Cash bought his ticket for that big barn dance in the sky.

For a decade they have been fusing the sounds of the Wild West with the manic energy of acid house, creating a sub-genre a bit like brown sauce and mayonnaise - an odd combination until you try it.

For this set, however, the 'Bama boys (and girl) stripped everything barer than a baboon's backside, all the while managing to retain the raw power of their songs.

Partly this was down to Rock Freebase's muscular guitar picking and the combination of Devlin Love's sultry, sweetly vicious vocals and Larry Love's whisky-soaked, coal-powered drawl.

The star of the show, however, was harmonica player Harpo Strangelove.

If Johnny B Goode plays the guitar like he rung a bell, Harpo plays harmonica like he's bashing his head against a cymbal.

From the keyboard line of Love Will Tear Us Apart to the mournful wail of Too Sick To Pray, he could cope with anything.

The spirit of the man in black is alive and well.
