Seth Lakeman, The Parlure Spiegeltent, Brighton, May 21

3:11pm Thursday 22nd May 2008

By Kate Morrison »

Seth Lakeman could be something of an anachronism: a folk singer whose ballads and reels deal mainly with experiences more relevant to his grand-father or great-grandfather.

Copper-mining, English Civil War battles and storms at sea are not obvious subjects with which to enthrall a modern audience.

But Lakeman and his musicians combine vintage material and skills with a rock sensibility and energy.

Their set was somewhat dampened by some tinny audio and the initially rather too civilized atmosphere of the Parlure tent. It was also cruelly truncated by the Parlure's strict licensing rules, cutting the band off just as they, and the audience, had started to warm up.

Despite this, the lads - of whom double bassist Ben Nicholls should win the award for most laconic band member ever, not excluding Alex James - gave value for money, though without the raw exuberance of their previous gigs at the Concorde.
