J-Live, Komedia, Brighton, May 21

"Five people can make the noise of 50, 50 can make the noise of 500, 500 can make the noise of 5,000," declared J-Live, like a professor about to prove his hypothesis true.

Strolling in to a half-empty Komedia, the former English teacher made light of a rare non sell-out on his UK tour by shaking hands with the crowd, leading them to the front and making them an integral part of his raucous vocals and heavy beats.

You trust J-Live's fluent flow in the same way you trust the syrupy bark of Busta Rhymes, had he been tutored by laidback De La Soul philosopher Pos.

Tracks from the new album he releases next week fared well against favourites from his previous four, in between a stint on the decks to rap over his own mixes.

Among the plethora of inventive American East Coast artists, he's one of the elite.
