Top children's authors will be giving talks and leading workshops in an annual two-day celebration of writing for young readers, which this year takes Leaping From The Page as its theme.

The weekend event will be focusing on film, theatre, television and radio adaptations of favourite children's books.

Among the special guests at the Sallis Benney Theatre are Dakota Blue Richards, the star of The Golden Compass, a film adaptation of Philip Pullman's first book in the His Dark Materials Trilogy, who will be answering questions from the audience tomorrow.

And Michelle Magorian, the writer of children's classic Goodnight Mister Tom, will be talking about her first novel in ten years, the post-war set Just Henry, on Sunday morning.

Other special guest speakers tomorrow include Kitty Taylor, the director of CBeebies favourite Charlie And Lola, Blue Peter Book Of The Year-award-winning author Nicky Singer, Carnegie Medal-winning writer David Almond and children's television producer Peter Tabern, who will be introducing a screening of Clay, an adaptation of David Almond's novel.

Sunday also features appearances by performance poet Valerie Bloom, the campaign chairman of Save Kids' TV Anna Home, manga comics artist Kiriko Kubo and a talk on adapting Elizabeth Goudge's The Little White Horse for television by Michael Cowan, managing director of film production company Spice Factory, and screenplay writer Lucy Shuttleworth.

Throughout the two days there will be workshops for adults and children, covering dramatic interpretations of Nicky Singer's Feather Boy, creating pop-up books and comics, writing for young people, storytelling and a session of decorating dragon cakes with Brighton's own Momma Cherri.

Sunday also features two sessions offering advice on getting published and building your career once you are published, featuring contributions from literary agent Penny Holroyde, Puffin's senior fiction editor Shannon Park, author Liz Pichon, Little Tiger Press commissioning editor Stephanie Stansbie and journalist turned web-designer Candy Gourlay.

Tomorrow also sees the Academy Of Creative Training (ACT) offering a free workshop for six to 18-year-olds at their base in Rock Place in Kemp Town.

The open day, which runs from 2pm to 4pm, also features face-painting, balloon modelling, wardrobe and make-up workshops and the chance to meet James Coombs from the CBBC series DinoSapien.

  • Festival starts 10am tomorrow, 11am Sunday, tickets from £10. Call 01273 571700.
