Let's eat!

2008 is shaping up to be the year of the celebrity for Brighton’s food and drink scene. Norman Cook has teamed up with Mike Dodd to relaunch the Japanese restaurant Okinami in New Road, Gordon Ramsay used his Kitchen Nightmares TV series to help Allan Love transform his struggling champagne and oyster bar Ruby Tates into the vibrant Love’s Fish Restaurant in Kemp Town, and Jamie Oliver will be opening his very own pucker Italian in Black Lion Street this summer.

While Mr Oliver has chosen to locate himself in The Lanes, celebrity chef Aldo Zilli has created the city’s own Little Italy by opening in Jubilee Square next to Carluccio’s and Pizza Express. Let’s hope too many Italian chefs don’t spoil the minestrone!

While we celebrate the new, we must also remember those who have sadly closed their doors this year. RIP The Strand and Mint Cafe & Restaurant. You’ll be missed.
