Bubble Kitschen
Kensington Gardens, Brighton. 07982 660696

Open 10am-6pm daily

Review: June 1, 2007

The Forager

With more reinventions than the Queen of Pop, this everchanging spot in North Laine seems to have finally found itself, thanks to new leaseholders Miles and Lisa Heathfield.

Fitting right in to the style of the street, Bubble Kitschen is a colourful, quirky slice of cafe culture, lovingly decorated with boot-fair finds.

From the retro mannequin/waitress who poses outside with a tray of kitsch comestibles, the brightly-coloured wallpaper which Lisa bought on eBay, to the Jackie and Blue Peter annuals scattered throughout the cafe, everything about Bubble Kitschen should appeal to discerning, young bohemian types.

So aside from the arty attention to detail, what do Bubble Kitschen do differently to all the other cafes in the vicinity? “Well, about 90 per cent of the food is organic”, says Lisa.

But it’s not all righteous, salady stuff. Although fresh juices and smoothies, salads and sandwiches are all available, Bubble Kitschen’s heart is in “organic, comfort food”.

The Froager

Bubble and squeak, bangers and mash, chocolate and banana pancakes, crumbles and cakes, hot dogs and all-day cooked breakfasts make up the menu, all home-made with good quality, organic ingredients. “One of our regulars said our chocolate cake was the best he’d had in Sussex,” says Lisa, who as well as being a full-time mum to the couple’s two boys manages the books and does all the baking, while Miles, frontman of local band The Poppycocks, works most of the shifts at the cafe.

Lisa and Miles’ commitment to sourcing organic produce does not stop at the food. While the organic and freerange sausages come from Boathouse Farm near Lewes and from the Brighton Sausage Co. a few yards away in Gloucester Road, they have also invested time and money in organic paints from Villa Natura to decorate the shop, and all the take-away packaging is bio-degradable.

Bubble Kitschen is available for hire in the evenings for private parties.
