Commuters returning to Hove
Station can now gain
comfort from the fact there
is something welcoming at
their destination.
Chokdee, meaning good
luck, is from the people
behind Sawadee Thai
restaurant in St James Street,
Kemp Town.
It’s an informal, cafe-style
eatery, serving afternoon tea
and coffee as well as an
extensive Thai menu, and
seems very likely to become a
popular spot for dining and
takeaway.
The menu of nearly 100
items offers up fiery dishes
and more delicate flavours,
with a good selection of stirfried
choices, salads, soups,
veggie options and curries.
Particularly impressive is
the seafood selection, which
includes pla chu chee (deepfried
cod fillet in delicate
curry spices and coconut
milk, £6.95) and pad ped ta-lay
(mixed seafood in red curry
sauce with Thai herbs, £6.95).
You can also order mussels,
squid and prawn dishes.
Curry-wise, if you tend to
stick to the greens and reds,
Chokdee offers an opportunity
to try something different.
Kaeng masaman nuea is a
mild beef curry, with peanuts
and potatoes (£5.50), and kaend
ped phed yang comprises duck
in red curry with tomatoes
and pineapple (£6.50).
Chokdee is an attractive
restaurant decorated with
darks browns and warm reds.
However, casual is definitely
the word here – the dining area
is small and with a steady
trickle of people coming in for
takeaways, it’s not the ideal
place for a quiet meal.
But it
has a lively, friendly buzz
about it and you can
enjoy your meal unrushed.
Customers order and pay at
the counter, making things
even more informal.
The lunch menu, available
from noon, offers a selection
of favourites from the main
menu for only £4.95.
