The Brunswick
Holland Road, Hove
01273 733984
Open noon-11.30pm Sun to Thurs
and noon-2am Fri and Sat.
The Brunswick boasts
a cosy interior lined
with the same kind
of art deco wood panelling
used to adorn the Orient
Express, no less.
It has been lovingly brought
back to life as part of an
extensive recent refurb which
has seen the striking building,
with its curved bay windows
and roof turrets, restored to its
Thirties architectural glory.
Period lighting and fireplaces
complete the intimate feel, but
there is far more to the
Brunswick than merely an
inviting pub.
New owners Phil Ryan and
Jim Osler have transformed the
former sports bar into a live
music and arts venue, with a
150-person capacity and an
extensive programme of events
throughout January and
February, many of them free.
The line-up tends to steer
away from young indie rock,
with the emphasis on good,
established local bands as well
as open mic and jazz nights.
On tap are a full range of
beers, including local ales and
Belgian lagers, as well as a
selection of red and white
wines.
The Olive Garden offers a
more tranquil spot for a drink,
and claims Hove’s oldest olive
tree within a walled, terraced
garden. With barbeques
promised in the summer, it
seems set to become an
atmospheric hangout.
Food is on offer from midday,
Wednesday to Sunday. Sunday
roast is a snip at £6.95 with all
the trimmings and accompanied
by live jazz, and the simple but
interesting menu caters for the
quick bite crowd as well as
those who would prefer to linger
over an evening meal.
Home-made meatball ciabatta
sandwiches (£4.50) and
selections of tapas (£5.50) give
way to Aberdeen Angus burgers
and curry of the day (both £6.95)
As a nice touch, you can call
ahead before midday and have
your food ready whenever you
choose to eat – great if you’re
pressed for time.
