Pic: Anna Fewster Robert Stillman
Influences: John Fahey, Kurt Weill, Scott Joplin and Maurice Ravel. Profile: With a sound combining piano rags with marching band rhythms, abandoned skating-rink organs with surreal tape collages, Robert Stillman’s wordless music, or Horses as he calls it, sounds like the score to a late night vintage film. His one-man live act sees him combine piano and organ with tape collages and modified percussion played with his feet. As well as his own solo work he has collaborated with Kurt Weisman, Luke Temple, Grizzly Bear and Glass Ghost. He recently released a CD and DVD, Three Early Maine Films, which features turn of the century archive footage from Robert’s US home state accompanied by his own compositions. This summer he will be releasing the Master Box EP a predecessor to the album Machine’s Song.
