Yoav, Barfly, Brighton, April 17

1:34pm Friday 11th April 2008

Described as "Damien Rice produced by The Neptunes", Israel-born Yoav is a singer-guitarist with a difference.

As well as playing his guitar in the traditional manner, he also plays it as percussion - creating a range of beats that encompass everything from dance rhythms to trip-hop. Initally inspired by the idea of translating dance music to guitars, he told one interviewer: "I started pounding (my guitar), learning what I could do with it, using it as my decks. You can get an assortment of kick drums and snare drums by hitting it in different places. The more I did it, the more possibilities I found."

Now signed to Dido's brother Rollo's label Field Recordings, he released his debut Charmed & Strange in January - a collection of tales of love gone wrong and a cover of The Pixies' classic Where Is My Mind?
