Albourne Green sits west of the old London to Brighton road and is the start of this mainly level, pleasant Wealden walk by Eddie Start. Sun-dappled bridleways, paddocks and meandering streams make this a delightful summer stroll.

This walk by Ben Perkins is a pleasant and varied field path stroll, starting and finishing at Ditchling and visiting two small downland churches, at Westmeston and Streat, the latter situated on a low greensand ridge, offering a fine prospect from the churchyard southwards towards Ditchling Beacon.

Rusper is a delightful village close to the county border in the Weald of north Sussex and has been a starting point for some of our earlier walks.

Starting from Bodle Street Green, this substantial and fairly strenuous walk by Ben Perkins explores the gently undulating southern slopes of the High Weald, descending to cross the valley of the tiny Nunningham Stream before rising to Boreham Street. The return route follows the 1066 Country Walk, passing the walker-friendly Ash Tree pub at Brown Bread Street.

Jack and Jill windmills are among the most distinctive landmarks of the South Downs. Eddie Start hits the high ridgeline and then descends on an ancient track to the Weald following well-defined paths but always with a view to those prominent landmarks.

This relatively short walk, by Ben Perkins, starts and finishes along the valley of the River Rother, rising through woodland to higher ground near Hurst Green. It provides a pleasant mix of field and woodland, following well established paths. Sadly, poor maintenance, patchy signposting, and a tricky steep bank make it adventurous, and only suitable for the sure-footed and reasonably agile walker.

The idyllic hilltop village of Horsted Keynes is the starting place for this High Weald walk by Eddie Start. It is a roller coaster journey over open meadows and into deep, wooded valleys with burbling streams, ponds and lakes, most of which feed into the River Ouse.

This walk by Ben Perkins provides a substantial and fairly strenuous linear route over the Downs from Hassocks to Falmer. It crosses familiar territory but several of the paths are new to Argus walks, including the steep ascent of the Downs at Streat Hill and the final woodland approach to Falmer along one of an extensive network of well maintained paths now established by Brighton and Hove Council in Stanmer Park.

This shorter walk from Whiteways picnic area is an ideal downland outing for the adventurous young family keen to explore wide bridle paths, distant views and secluded woodland.

The Explorer Map gives no indication that Park Wood – a substantial area of old coppiced woodland to the north of Hailsham – is publicly accessible, owned by the Environment Agency and carefully managed by East Sussex County Council. Starting and finishing at Hailsham, the outward leg of Ben Perkins’ walk via Magham Down opens out briefly to follow the edge of the large tract of drained marshland known as Pevensey Levels.
