Thomas Saves The Day, The Brighton Centre, Brighton, April 4

12:41pm Monday 7th April 2008

The Sodor railway is remarkably familiar: nothing runs on time but there are plenty of places to spend money while you're waiting.

This should have been great theatre - the Thomas books have strong stories - but things went awry. Here, the trains were subservient to the actors, in contrast to the books where the human characters are bit-part players. The best bits were when the engines were on stage, but we had to endure some second-rate songs before seeing them.

We didn't make it to the end - my Thomas-mad son, who had been excited all day, wanted to go home at the interval.

This was a shabby production, with little thought given to bedtimes and young attention spans, but plenty given to selling goodies (£6 for an 16-page programme anyone?) Perhaps the saddest sight was the trademark sign next to Thomas on the backdrop - just who thinks of intellectual property at a kids' show?
