Jethro, White Rock Theatre, Hastings, April 7

12:22pm Wednesday 9th April 2008

By Tony Flood »

One of the best storytellers in the business, Jethro came out with some rib-tickling tales that had his audience in fits of laughter.

And with such a wealth of jokes on a variety of subjects ranging from snakes to policemen, it is a pity he finds it necessary to repeatedly talk about uncontrollable excretion and insult women and homosexuals.

But his opening joke was superb. He told us: "I wrote to Michael Parkinson asking if I could appear on his show. He replied 'No, you can't' and couldn't even spell 'can't'."

The Cornishman vowed afterwards he won't be coming to Hastings again after failing to sell out this gig, with an audience of about 600 people.

He also admitted some of his material was old stuff. The old jokes should be axed.

His timing was first class and he was at his best when poking fun at his clueless "friend", Denzil Penberthy.

The former operatic society bass also demonstrated his singing talent, but left most of the singing to support act Shaun Perry.
