Omid Djalili, Dome Concert Hall, Brighton, April 7

12:29pm Wednesday 9th April 2008

Some comics make me inwardly squirm. Some make me smile. Some make me laugh out loud. But the best make me glad I'm in a darkened room surrounded by other people laughing so loud they don't notice the weird gasping, choking noises I'm making as the tears come streaming down my face.

Omid Djalili made me do all of the above. I think the squirming effect was intentional and the cringe-worthy punchlines were always followed by a cheesy song.

His comedy is heavily rooted in his Iranian/ British heritage, but he dealt with racial and political issues with a sure touch, as well as mixing in impressions of Godzilla and indulging in his addiction to talking with a Nigerian accent.

Finishing off the night with a trademark dance, billed as therapy for the audience's problems, he certainly cheered up my boyfriend and made Monday a lot happier.
