The prolonged standing ovation at the end of the show underlined the stunning success of the performance of the students from The Rattonians Youth Group.

Several local youngsters showed they could be potential stars of the future, particularly Edward Layer as corrupt, money-grabbing innkeeper Thenardier.

Layer and Megan Mason, as his contemptuous wife, delivered the hilarious Master Of The House number magnificently.

Alex Adams, in the lead role of Jean Valjean, and Catherine Anderson, as desperate mother Fantine, were also outstanding.

This first production by the group was also enriched by the performances of Laura Sivers, Samantha King, Zac Adlam and Lily Potter.

Indeed, most of the cast impressed in the epic saga set in 19th-Century France, telling how Valjean breaks the terms of his parole after 19 years on a chain gang for stealing bread and is ruthlessly pursued by obsessive lawman Javert.
