Jo Neary, Upstairs At Three And Ten, Brighton, Apr 26

Morphing easily from a dour Irish woman joylessly celebrating the benefits of laughter to an Eastern European, celebrity-obsessed dolphin, Jo Neary's talents as a comic actress were indisputable.

In just a flick of her hair or roll of an eye she captured a character and hinted tantalisingly at the layers beneath.

She has a particularly good eye for portraying typically English nuances - as seen in the farcically nervous woman giving a talk on sex aids and the barely repressed histrionics of her Brief Encounter-inspired Celia Johnson.

It was when she played herself that she came unstuck. Stripped of the wigs and scripts, Neary attempted to "smash down the fourth wall" by bumbling sweetly but ineptly through some anecdotes about her life.

But her clumsy, skittish manner left her looking eerily like one of her own flawed characters.
