The Hypochondriac, Pavilion Theatre, April 26
This showcase one-off play was a diverting evening's entertainment and earned the young
cast an A for effort.
Moliere's script was probably packed with delicious gems, but such riches were often squandered by a cast which, in turn, mumbled and dashed their lines.
Tom Robinson's Argan, while an engaging presence, appeared overawed - and he
was not alone.
However, Phoebe Bunting's confident portrayal of Argan's maid Toinette saved the day. And both Angelique (Annie Sinclair-Wilson) and her impoverished suitor Cleante (Aaron Nice) came into their own with
a beautifully-realised duet.
A single-night production must have been stressful for this inexperienced cast from Sussex Downs College and they certainly didn't disgrace themselves.
However, all would have benefited from some solid director's notes about their projection.
