Hello, Dolly!, Congress Theatre, Eastbourne, until Saturday, May 10
Producer Chris Moreno is on to a winner with Hello, Dolly! - which in addition to the title song has other show-stoppers in Put On Your Sunday Clothes, Before The Parade Passes By and It Only Takes A Moment.
Anita Dobson is superb as meddling matchmaker Dolly Levi despite the fact her Bronx Yiddish accent keeps slipping, and she is given excellent support by
Darren Day and Louise English in delivering the hit numbers with gusto.
But there are some floors in this production, notably a ponderous start, David McAlister's inability to make Horace Vandergelder sufficiently mean and the lack of substance shown by Day and Hamilton Sargent as his two shop workers.
Amanda Salmon demonstrates how to make the most of a role with her snorting, shrieking, giggling portrayal of Minnie Fay.
Some of the scenes could have more impact, but dazzling costumes, slick dance routines and wholehearted singing make it an enjoyable evening.
