Underfoot In Show Business, Devonshire Park Theatre, Eastbourne, until May 17

Underfood In Show Business provides an amusing insight into how struggling actors and writers cope with rejection.

Eastbourne Theatres are to be congratulated for taking a risk by giving a world premiere to a new play. Unfortunately, many local theatre-goers failed to back them and Devonshire Park Theatre was less than half full.

Adapted from the memoir by Helene Hanff, author of hit play 86 Charing Cross Road, Underfoot In Show Business focuses on the thousands of stage-struck youngsters who go to New York with dreams of being the next big star but don't make it.

Rachel Izen is superb in the demanding role of a writer who can't persuade producers to put on her plays. Felicity Dean is also impressive as failed actress Maxine, while Jos Vantyler's several roles require him to dress up as a woman, sing Oklahoma and show off his naked backside!

Perhaps some of Helene's speeches would have benefited from being shorter and crisper. But my only other criticism was that the programme did not identify which parts the five members of the cast actually played.
