Area: Burgess Hill-Haywards Heath

Ardingly Ardingly
Ardingly Reservoir is one of those tucked-away reminders of how dependent we are upon the most basic of natural resources. The reservoir was created in 1978 to harvest water from the head of the River Ouse and its tributaries to provide drinking water for the mid- Sussex community.

Cowfold circular
Cowfold circular

Pretty Cowfold stands at the busy junction of the east-west A272 road and the road between Horsham and Henfield. From each corner of the crossroads is a wide choice of walking routes which lead out into the surrounding landscape.

Warninglid circular
Warninglid circular

Warninglid sits just a little more than a mile away from the busy A23 main road but the delightful, if short, village street could be many miles from the buzz of modern traffic. On this walk we head-off to the south and then traverse west, on a track we have used on earlier walks, passing through woodland and along hidden, flooded valleys that are evidence of the earlier Wealden iron industry.

Pyecombe circular
Pyecombe circular

Pyecombe sits in folds of the Downs, as it has for centuries, with its claim to fame having been the production of shepherds’ crooks by the village blacksmith. This walk begins at the northern end of the village, signposted as Pyecombe Street from the A273 road.

Slinfold circular Slinfold circular
The village of Slinfold is a neat settlement with many old Wealden houses and a prominent church sitting at the centre. On this walk we head out west into the Low Weald across mainly level farmland and the occasional sheltering copse.

Romany Ridge Romany Ridge
This walk in the Low Weald starts and finishes across two parts of Chailey Common, Romany Ridge Common and Pound Common, segments of an extensive 450-acre patchwork of heathland, designated and managed as a local nature reserve...

Bodle Street Green Bodle Street Green
This is a fairly short but enjoyable and mildly challenging walk in the depths of the southern High Weald, taking you well off the beaten track in an area where some of the paths are little used, often poorly signed and occasionally difficult to follow.
Date added: 10 September 2007

Boxgrove circular Boxgrove circular
From the ruins of the 12th century Boxgrove Priory this walk climbs, via a diabolical ditch and an ancient track, onto the high Downs. There is a diversion to the prominent Halnaker Windmill, giving wide views over the surrounding countryside, and a bootbashing return stroll through extensive woodland.
Date added: 2 April 2007

Crossbush circular Crossbush circular
This walk begins in Crossbush, about three-quarters-of-a-mile east of Arundel. It traverses flat country that is part of the coastal plain between the South Downs and the English Channel. The area has ancient buildings, pre-dating the 1066 Norman invasion and there is fertile land that is home to the commercial horticultural industry.
Date added: 20 March 2007

Wolstonbury Hill Wolstonbury Hill
The steep climb of a significant peak is the main feature of this walk. From the busy village of Hurstpierpoint the approach to Wolstonbury Hill crosses farmland, with the remnants of a Roman road, and climbs up gully paths and earthworks to the summit.

A Wealdon dwelling in Shermanbury Shermanbury to Twineham
You might well pass through Shermanbury on the busy A281 road and hardly notice it but there are hidden byways and woodlands hereabouts which are well worth further exploration.
Date added: 25 November 2006

Albourne circular Albourne circular
Albourne is a small rural community which once stood at crossroads on the busy London to Brighton road. The construction of the A23 road meant the traffic moved east and the village was able to adopt a more measured and peaceful pace.

Burgess Hill to Wivelsfield Burgess Hill to Wivelsfield
Our walk this week, starting at Burgess Hill railway station and finishing at the next stop up the London line at Wivelsfield is almost entirely rural as it loops to the east of the town.
Date added: 18 January 2006
