The Argus: Going Out Award

The Going Out Awards

Best Event - Sponsored by King of Clubs

Sussex has plenty of options for nights and days out – but there is also a variety of one-off events, festivals and celebrations.

We want to hear about the most memorable event from the last 12 months – whether it was a free family event, a music festival or an all-encompassing arts experience which took over an entire city or area.

THE SHORTLIST

Brighton Festival

GUEST artistic director Hofesh Shechter presided over this year’s Brighton Festival, offering the latest in cutting edge dance and choreography alongside world-class theatre, classical music and free art exhibitions across the city.

Alongside exclusive performances by visiting international artists Dmitry Krymov, Martin Creed, Cheek By Jowl, Cat Power and Emmylou Harris, there was an extensive free programme of entertainment across the city over the three weeks in May, launched with the annual Children’s Parade.

Brighton Fringe

BRIGHTON Fringe’s second four-week run saw more than 730 events and 3,500 performances staged across 200 venues in the city.

The open access event this year held its own Window Festival offering support to 20 shows in the first weekend picked by Arts Council England.

This year saw the return of the Spiegeltent in The Old Steine, pop-up venues at Brighton’s Wagner Hall and The Old Courtroom, plus a march across the Sussex Downs to commemorate the 750th anniversary of the Battle Of Lewes.

Brighton And Hove Pride

AN ESTIMATED 160,000 partygoers flooded into Brighton in August to celebrate Pride.

As well as the parade through the city and the annual party in Preston Park, featuring appearances by Katy B, Blue, Martha Wash and Sam Bailey, the two-day St James’s Street party was ticketed for the first time.

With the announcement of plans for a new Sunday family friendly event in Preston Park for 15,000 people in 2015, Brighton Pride is continuing to grow.

Glorious Goodwood

MOVIE stars and catwalk models flock to Glorious Goodwood every year for five days of summer racing on the estate just outside Chichester.

Ladies Day is always the most popular fixture of the festival. This year’s event was screened on Channel 4 with commentary by celebrity fashion expert Gok Wan.

And among the special guests were Hollywood icon Tom Cruise who presented the Magnolia Cup for the ladies-only race.

Shoreham Airshow

AUGUST’S Shoreham Airshow was deemed the busiest in its history.

Vintage aircraft played a big part in this year’s event to mark the 70th anniversary of D-Day – with the Battle Of Britain flypast and a re-enactment of an attack on a German airbase particular highlights.

Those watching the skies were also able to catch a flight by the UK nuclear bomber the Vulcan, wingwalking displays and a tribute to the US Navy.

AND THE WINNER IS... The Argus: Shoreham Airshow Shoreham Airshow

Shoreham’s Airshow’s John Perian toasted the award as the ever-popular event celebrates its 25th year.

He says: “We are highly honoured to receive the award – especially as this was our 25th anniversary year.

“The other good news is we also have reached the £2million target for donations to RAFA (Royal Air Forces Association), which provides welfare and comradeship to all members of the Royal Air Force and Royal Air Force Regiment.

“It is a record equalled by none from any aviation event.

“We couldn’t believe it when we found out we had broken the target.”

Airshow organiser Derek Harber says: “It is team effort that makes this airshow the success it is. We are all volunteers who give our time to run the event.

“Already plans are being made for the 2015 airshow which will be held on August 22 and August 23.”
